There's no single Sacred Valley altitude — our Sacred Valley + Moray and Maras route crosses several towns and archaeological sites, each at a different elevation.
The Sacred Valley doesn't sit at one fixed elevation. It's a roughly 60 km stretch of the Urubamba River valley, and altitude shifts noticeably from one end to the other — generally lower near Urubamba and Ollantaytambo, and considerably higher at Chinchero, which actually sits above Cusco itself.
Cusco sits at approximately 3,350m. Most of the Sacred Valley floor — Urubamba, Ollantaytambo, and Pisac town — is noticeably lower and warmer than Cusco. The exception is Chinchero, which at around 3,762m is actually higher than Cusco, and is in fact the highest point most travelers reach on a Sacred Valley Full Day tour.
Sacred Valley + Maras & Moray Full Day Tour
| Place | Approx. Altitude | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Cusco (starting point) | 3,350m / 10,991 ft | Your baseline — most travelers spend 1–2 days here first to acclimatize |
| Chinchero | 3,762m / 12,342 ft | The highest point of the tour — noticeably cooler air and brighter midday sun |
| Moray | 3,500m / 11,483 ft | Similar to Cusco, open terrain around the terraces |
| Maras Salt Mines | ~3,385m / 11,105 ft | Sources vary between roughly 3,200–3,385m |
| Urubamba (lunch stop) | 2,780–2,871m / 9,120–9,419 ft | Noticeably warmer — a natural place to recover before the afternoon |
| Ollantaytambo | 2,790m / 9,153 ft | The lowest point of the tour |
| Pisac (town) | 2,972m / 9,750 ft | Where the afternoon stop begins |
| Pisac Inca (archaeological site) | ~3,250m / 10,663 ft | An uphill climb from the town level to the terraces above |
Chinchero, at approximately 3,762m, is the highest point reached on the Sacred Valley Full Day tour — higher than Cusco itself. The rest of the day generally trends downward in elevation, ending the afternoon at the relatively low altitude of Ollantaytambo and Pisac. See our full Sacred Valley attractions guide for what makes each of these stops worth the visit, altitude aside.
Some travelers notice the thinner air at Chinchero in the morning, especially if they've arrived in Cusco very recently. Because most of the rest of the day sits at or below Cusco's altitude, and walking is mostly on flat or gently sloping paths, the Sacred Valley is generally considered one of the gentler full day excursions near Cusco in terms of altitude exposure.
Spend at least a day or two in Cusco before your tour if possible, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol the night before, and pace yourself at Chinchero in particular. This is general travel guidance, not medical advice — if you have specific health concerns about altitude, speak with a doctor before your trip.
It's a reasonable option, though most travelers still benefit from a day of rest in Cusco first. Because the Sacred Valley's overall altitude profile is gentler than Cusco's high point and considerably gentler than a trek like Rainbow Mountain, some travelers do choose it as an early, lower-intensity day. If you've only just arrived, listen to how you feel and don't hesitate to reschedule if needed.
